  Dear Puppy-Home,

North Texas has a handful of breeders that I can recommend to you in confidence.  However, I am not certain that any of these have puppies available right now.  On demand Whippets from good breeders are not easy to find.  It takes a bit of luck and the alignment of the stars.  Whippets on demand from less than reputable breeders, however, are out there all the time and, indeed, this goes hand in hand with their irresponsibility.  More often than not, they are making puppies to make money, not to make good dogs.  Please be cautious, then, for your sake and the breed’s.

My unsolicited suggestion is to avoid breeders advertising their puppies on Petfinder, k9stud, Nextdaypets, etc.  My reasons are two-fold.  These individuals are typically willing to ship puppies across the country and into homes with people they have never seen, briefly interviewed and know too little about to determine whether they are a good match for the puppy they are looking to sell.  That’s not responsible.  In addition, the person potentially buying a puppy has no chance to see the environment the puppies are raised in, the parent(s) from which they came or the person who bred them and who should become a long-time mentor and counselor to you, Puppy-Home, as you take on the 10-15 year responsibility of a living being.  Moreover, with long-distance shipping, if once the puppy arrives by carrier it is not what was promised it would be (i.e., healthy, socialized, well-adjusted and non-aggressive), it is likely you get little to no help from the seller to fix the situation.  Sale over.

I’ve been "in dogs" for over 25 years; I know a few things but not all things.  I run in the Whippet circles doing conformation, lure coursing and racing and so I know many Whippet people but not everyone.  If you find a breeder that I haven’t named or implied, and you would like a second opinion on them, let me know.  I’ll shoot you straight and hope for the best.  I love my breed, Puppy-home.  Not everyone does, so please be discriminating.
